U. S. Steel Announces Update on Metallics Strategy

Image
New Production of Direct Reduced (DR)-grade Pellets U. S.  Steel  plans to break ground in Fall 2022 at one of its two Minnesota Ore Operations facilities, Keetac or Minntac, to construct a system dedicated to producing DR-grade pellets. This will enable one of the Company’s existing pelletizing plants to not only create DR-grade pellets but also maintain the optionality to continue producing blast furnace-grade pellets. The Company does not expect the approximately $150 million DR-grade pellet investment to change the 2022 capital spending budget and will continue to prudently manage future capex in-line with its strategic priorities. DR-grade pellets are a critical feedstock for ironmaking in a direct reduced iron (DRI) or hot briquetted iron (HBI) process that ultimately supplies EAF steelmaking. Upon completion, the Company would have the option to sell the new pellets to third-party DRI / HBI producers or use them to feed a potential future DRI or HBI facility of i...

France’s burkini ban affects all women – not just Muslims

Image
In France last Tuesday, the country’s highest court voted to overturn a decision made in Grenoble, a city that contravened its burkini ban and permitted women to wear full-coverage swimwear if they so desired. Since 2016, burkini bans have been implemented at public pools in France, but after protests from Muslim women, Grenoble’s municipal council voted to suspend the ban last month. France’s Council of State struck down the dispute and reinstated the ban, saying that it could not allow “selective exceptions to the rules to satisfy religious demands”. US Senate passes first gun control bill in decades

Image
The US Senate has passed a gun control bill - the most significant firearms legislation in nearly 30 years. Fifteen Republicans joined Democrats in the upper chamber of Congress to approve the measure by 65 votes to 33. The bill will now have to pass in the House of Representatives before President Biden can sign it into law. In a statement released after the vote, the president called on members of the House to "promptly vote on this bipartisan bill and send it to my desk". "Tonight, after 28 years of inaction, bipartisan members of Congress came together to heed the call of families across the country and passed legislation to address the scourge of gun violence in our communities," Mr Biden said. Tobacco industry looks to win over Gulf regulators in the great vape debate

Image
Tobacco industry figures are looking to convince decision-makers that e-cigarettes and vaping are an alternative in the heavy-smoking Middle East. So far, they have met with tough resistance. E-cigarettes and vaping products are banned Egypt, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman and Qatar — although they are widely available on the black market — as regulators fear a vaping epidemic among teenagers that is similar to the one in the US. While the UAE allows the sale of e-cigarettes, regulators do not support their use as part of efforts to encourage smokers to quit, and there are curbs on their promotion and advertising. Marine Le Pen cements her place in French mainstream as Emmanuel Macron loses majority

Image
The far-right National Rally party achieved a record result in France’s parliamentary elections on Sunday, increasing its number of National Assembly members by more than tenfold. This success cemented the party's rise from fringe status to mainstream opposition and dealt a humbling blow to French President Emmanuel Macron , who saw his hopes of pushing through his domestic agenda stymied just two months after being re-elected for a second term . Ms Le Pen's or National Rally — Rassemblement National in French — took 89 seats in the 577-seat parliament, according to a final tally of ballots released by the Interior Ministry. Major pollsters last week estimated 25-50 National Rally seats. It is up from just two seats in 2012 and eight in the previous poll in 2017. “We are facing a democratic shock because of a very strong breakthrough by the Rassemblement National,” Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said. A confident Ms Le Pen said on Monday her party would demand to chair the N...
