Russia Is Losing a War Against Hackers Stealing Huge Amounts of Data

Image
Russia is known for its army of hackers , but since the start of its invasion of Ukraine, dozens of Russian organizations — including government agencies, oil and gas companies, and financial institutions — have been hacked, with terabytes of stolen data leaked onto the internet. Distributed Denial of Secrets , the transparency collective that’s best known for its 2020  release of 270  gigabytes of U.S. law enforcement data (in the midst of racial justice protests following the murder of George Floyd), has become the de facto home of the hacked datasets from Russia. The datasets are submitted to DDoSecrets mostly by anonymous hackers, and those datasets are then made available to the public on the collective’s website and distributed using BitTorrent . (I am an adviser to DDoSecrets).

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s Attacks on Disney May Violate First Amendment

Image
Disney is not the only storied American institution that right-wing politicians may face in their latest salvo against “woke” culture: According to some expert lawyers, they might come up against the Constitution as well. While some First Amendment lawyers say that a new Florida law revoking The Walt Disney Co.’s special tax status as a result of free speech made by the corporation violates the First Amendment’s protections against retaliation, other experts said the unique circumstances complicate the case.

Whistling Past the Graveyard: Why It’s So Hard to Rid the Courts of Junk Science

Steven Mark Chaney had nine alibi witnesses. From morning to night, his movements on June 21, 1987, were well documented. Nonetheless, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murders of John and Sally Sweek, drug dealers Chaney had previously bought cocaine from and to whom he supposedly owed $500 — his alleged motive for brutally murdering them that day in their Dallas, Texas, apartment. There was nothing to tie him to the crime, save for a supposed bite mark found on John’s arm that several forensic dentists said matched Chaney’s dentition.

Fossil Fuel Lobbyists Continue to Seize On Russia’s War in Ukraine to Push Long-Term Interests

Image
Since the Mountain Valley pipeline was announced eight years ago, the proposal to transport fracked natural gas from West Virginia to export terminals in southern Virginia has faced regulatory hurdles and local opposition. The main  concern  is that the project runs through environmentally sensitive waterways and farmlands, putting them at risk of spills — while further promoting the development of fracking throughout West Virginia. Image
Dubai’s billionaire ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum inflicted ‘exorbitant’ domestic abuse on his ex-wife Princess Haya, a senior British judge has concluded, as he awarded her sole responsibility for looking after their children. The ruling caps the end of an extraordinary, bitter and hugely expensive three-year custody battle at the High Court in London between Mohammed and his former wife,  Princess Haya bint al-Hussein , half-sister of Jordan’s King Abdullah. In a judgment published today, senior judge Sir Andrew McFarlane said Sheikh Mohammed, 72, ‘consistently displayed coercive and controlling behaviour with respect to those members of his family who he regards as behaving contrary to his will’. Sir Andrew – the most senior family court judge in England and Wales – limited Sheikh Mohammed’s parental responsibility for his daughter and son, Al Jalila, 14, and Zayed, 10. Princess Haya will now have sole responsibility for their two children in regards to thei...
